Chicago footwork pioneer DJ Rashad found dead

DJ Rashad, known as a pioneer of the Chicago footwork scene, was found dead at the age of 35 on Saturday afternoon.

A friend found him unresponsive in a Chicago West Side apartment and when police arrived on the scene, he was pronounced dead, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cook County medical examiner scheduled an autopsy for Sunday.

Dj Rashad, real named Rashad Harden, was scheduled to play a show on Saturday night in Detroit and he was just about to release his We On 1 EP on Monday through vinyl.

According to police, Rashad likely died of a drug overdose as drugs and drug paraphernalia was next to him.

Chance The Rapper tweeted the sad news saying, "Music lost a legend today. And he was my friend. Love you DJ Rashad. RIP" Rashad had opened for his friend in 2013 for the "Social Experiment Tour."

According to Rolling Stone, DJ Rashad was best known as a pioneer of the footwork, which is dance music that often features loops of rap songs and is known to be frenetic and hypnotizing.
