Congressman Michael Grimm's (R-NY) lawyer says that prosecutors plan on charging his client for campaign finance violations.
Charges will likely be filed as early as next week, his attorney William McGinley said, reports USA Today. "After more than two years of investigation plagued by malicious leaks, violations of grand jury secrecy, and strong-arm tactics, the U.S. Attorney's Office has disclosed its intent to file criminal charges."
The House Ethics Committee was also investigating Grimm for the same violations, but let the Justice Department take over the case two years ago. A New York rabbi spoke with former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) claiming that Grimm tried to extort money from his congregation.
According to Fox News, The congressman received over $250,000 in campaign contributions from Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto's congregation. Allegedly some of the money was from straw donors.
A Houston woman, who knew Grimm romantically, said that he was using these straw donors for illegal campaign contributions. She claimed that she made the contributions through her friends' names, who were OK with it.
Grimm might be best remembered for threatening to toss a reporter off a balcony in January after the reporter, Michael Scotto, asked him about the FB investigation. After leaving the interview, he stormed back over to Scotto and told him, on camera, "Let me be clear to you. If you ever do that to me again, I'll throw you off this (expletive) balcony."
