Dolly Parton is Miley Cyrus’ godmother and the “Wrecking Ball” singer has praised her in many previous interviews. However, Parton is getting serious about what she thinks of her goddaughter, saying her image is all just a little bit too much.
Parton wrote her thoughts about the 21-year-old singer for TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list. She did note that while most people were worried about Cyrus following her MTV VMAs performance last year, which started her transformation into a sexy pop star, she wasn’t.
“If I didn't know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. But I've watched her grow up. So I don't. She knows what she's doing,” wrote Parton.
She went on to explain that Cyrus had to do something “drastic” to break away from her Hannah Montana persona, Us Weekly reports.
“She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever. And she was just smotherin' and chokin' in it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic."
Parton continued to say Cyrus “made her point” now and it’s time to pull back th reins a bit. She praised her for her newest album Bangerz, especially her song “Wrecking Ball.”
“I’m hoping that now she can relax and show people how talented she really is. ’Cause the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart. And she doesn’t have to be so drastic. But I will respect her choices. I did it my way, so why can’t she do it her way?” she wrote.
