Tennessee hired Donnie Tyndall as its new men’s basketball coach on Tuesday. He will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Tyndall will replace Cuonzo Martin. Martin left Tennessee for California on April 15. This season Tennessee went 23-14 and made an NCAA regional semifinal appearance. In three seasons with Tennessee, Martin had a 63-41 record, according to the Associated Press. Martin and his predecessor at Tennessee, Bruce Pearl, led Tennessee to the regional semifinals four times in the last eight years.
"I am humbled, appreciative, and thankful for this tremendous opportunity," Tyndall said in a statement. "We have great tradition at the University of Tennessee and with our men's basketball program, and we will work tirelessly to take our program to new heights."
For six seasons, Tyndall coached at his alma mater, Morehead State. At Morehead he went 114-85 with two NCAA tournament appearances. He helped led Morhead to an upset win against Louisville in the NCAA tournament in 2011.Tyndall was with Southern Mississippi the last two years. He had a 56-17 record (25-7 in Conference USA play) and made it to the NIT quarterfinals twice, according to USA Today. This year Southern Miss had a 29-7 record and made it to the NIT quarterfinals.
Tyndall is one of basketball’s up and coming coaches. However he has a big challenge ahead of him in Tennessee. Tennessee is losing four of its top scorers due to graduation and the NBA draft. Jordan McRae, Jarnell Stokes, and Jeronne Maymon are three players that they are losing. Josh Richardson is the only player who is returning next season who made more than 10 starts this past season.
