The Falcon 9 rocket was launched successfully from Florida on Friday towards the International Space Station. With a mission to resupply the station with equipment and food, the rocket is hoped to be the first reusable space rocket to make it safely back to earth.
The inventor, Elon Musk, is working to bring the costs down of space transportation through the use of the Falcon 9, reported The Telegraph.
The Falcon 9 landed in the Atlantic after re-entering the earth’s atmosphere as the Dragon spacecraft, which was initially attached to the front of the rocket, continued into space. Numerous ships have been sent to pick up the rocket for further analysis.
The Dragon spacecraft is currently carrying the cargo. It is set to reach the International Space System on Sunday.
On broad the Dragon are 2.5 tonnes of cargo and a pair of legs to be used for Robonaut 2, s robot that works in the International Space System. With the use of the nine-foot legs, Robonaut will be able to move around more easily.
The Dragon spacecraft is apart of a 12-mission contract with NASA costing $1.6 billion, according to CNET.
