Army Pfc. Chelsea Manning has petitioned a judge to consider legally changing her name from Bradley Manning. Leavenworth County District Judge David King will consider the name change during a hearing today in Kansas.
Manning announced in August 2013 that she no longer wants to be considered a man and should be known as “Chelsea Manning.” The 25-year-old was sentenced to 35 years in prison earlier that month after being found guilty of 20 charges related to leaking over 700,000 documents to WikiLeaks.
According to The Associated Press, an administrator for the district court confirmed that there has been no opposition to Manning’s petition filed. King can issue a decision during today’s hearing, which Manning will likely not attend, or at a future date.
George Wright, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon, told the AP that the petition will not change the case at all. “This potential court action is only a name change, and will have no other effect on his current status other than the name in his records,” Wright stated.
Manning, who was an intelligence analyst, was diagnosed by at least two Army specialists with gender identity disorder. She is currently serving her sentence at Fort Leavenworth.
