U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm is in custody, officials said Monday morning, ahead of a press conference. Grimm, a Republican representing New York, was the subject of a two-year FBI investigation, which looked into contributions to his campaign.
It was announced last week that he would face charges in connection to contributions he received for his 2010 campaign. According to USA Today, Grimm has already admitted to receiving $250,000 to $300,000 from the followers of Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto. Some of these followers have said they donated thousands of dollars illegally, including using straw donors.
Several people linked to Pinto, including businessman Ofer Biton, have faced criminal charges. Diana Durand, who was once romantically linked to Grimm, has been charged with using straw donors and making false claims to the FBI.
Law enforcement officials told CNN that he is in custody now, although it is still not known what charges he will face. Those charges will be announced by Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch during a press conference at 11 a.m.
Grimm is best known nationally for making threats to a NY1 reporter after the State of the Union when the reporter asked about the investigation. He was not charged in that incident.
