Hollywood can find inspiration in anything, but this is really new. Filmmaker Adam Rifkin has been inspired to make a movie based on the Peeps marshmallow candy and has sold the film and TV rights.
According to Deadline, the Underdog filmmaker sold the idea with his producing partners, Brent Tinter and Brian E. Rochlin to Just Born, the company behind the world’s favorite Easter candy. Rifkin pitched them on a LEGO Movie-style project in which a Peep is lost during a Peeps diorama contest and has an adventure in fantasy worlds.
Rifkin only learned about the Peeps diorama culture recently when his niece and nephew built one for a contest. He looked into that and came up with an idea to make a film based on it.
Peeps remain a popular confection, with Just Born selling about $2 billion worth annually. They have inspired diorama contests and even one guy to try to eat 100 of them in two minutes, as Jezebel pointed out this weekend.
Maybe that guy could get a role in the movie?
As for Riskin, he’ll have to hold off on doing this project. He has to direct Director’s Cut first, which was written by Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller. His credits include Mouse Hunt, Small Soldiers and Detroit Rock City.
We can only cross our fingers in the hope that an M&M’s movie is coming soon.
