Second baseman Jedd Gyorko signed a six-year contract extension with the San Diego Padres on Monday. The deal replaces the one-year deal that was agreed to last month.
The new deal is worth $35 million and has a team option for 2020. Gyorko won’t be getting minor league pay starting next year. He will get $294,000 in minor league pay this year. His salary next year will be $2 million and it will grow each year to $13 million in 2019. The Padres 2020 option is for $13 million with a $1 million buyout, according to the Associated Press. The option could increase by $2 million and the buyout could go up by $750,000, based on All-Star appearances and Gyorko finishing in the top ten in MVP voting.
''I wanted to be a Padre,'' Gyorko said. ''When they came to me and kind of showed the vision of what they have looking forward, it's something I want to be a part of. Be a part of a championship team. I think that's what we're going to be, hopefully soon, if not, definitely by the end of my contract.''
The deal is the third-largest for a player who has played for just one year. Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves (seven years, $58 million) and Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun (eight years, $45 million) are the two deals that are bigger than Gyorko’s, according to ESPN, which first reported the extension.
Gyorko, 25, is only in his second full season in the majors. Last year he hit .249 with 23 homeruns and 63 RBIs. The 23 homeruns was the most by any Padres player. This year he is hitting .163 with one homerun and seven RBIs, according to CBS Sports.
Gyorko, who played third base in the minors, could go back to third if Chase Headley leaves as a free agent at the end of the season.
