San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been named the NBA coach of the year.
ESPN reported that on Tuesday Popovich was named the recipient of the 2014 Red Auerbach NBA Coach of the Year award and became just the third three-time winner to receive the honor. Don Nelson and Pat Riley are the other two.
The 65-year-old coach has been with the team since 1996 and produced four NBA Championships and five Western Conference Championships.
This year, the Spurs finished with a league best 62-20 regular season record, despite injuries and no Spur averaging 30 minutes or more in a game, SB Nation noted.
Popovich received 380 votes, behind him Jeff Hornacek of the Phoenix Suns received 339 and Tom Thibodeau of the Chicago Bulls received 159 votes.
The award has been presented annually since the 1962-63 season and is named after the former Boston Celtics coach, who took his team to nine NBA Championships.
Former recipients of the award include Phil Jackson, George Karl, Larry Bird, Scott Brooks, Mike DiAntoni and Larry Brown.
