Ten foods identified as fastest rising prices

Every month, it seems as if the prices in food are increasing at the supermarket. According to new research, the increase in production and wholesale prices verify the different items that have risen, and will keep rising, within the next year.

According to USA Today, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was released that identified retail food prices rose 0.4 percent from the former month showing the same increase as February.

However, the recent increases are more related with the extreme droughts in the west - the Southwest, Great Plains and parts of California suffered three consecutive years of drought. 24/7 Wall Street reports and the bad weather have caused high prices in meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables.

Brad Rippey, meteorologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), says that the droughts could very well affect crops. “Agriculture uses about 80 percent of California’s water,” he said. “A lot of fields may have to lay fallow.””

The droughts have also reflected in the increase in prices with meat because the lack of water spikes the prices of feed for cattle. According to the site, bacon prices have risen more than any other food increasing 53 percent to $5.55 per pound.

24/7 Wall Street lists the ten foods that increased in price the past year. They include : grapefruit, chicken, turkey, wine, margarine, peanut butter, coffee, oranges, ground beef and, of course, bacon.
