The Immigrant has been on must-see lists for movie fans for awhile now, especially after it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Now, American audiences will finally get to see it next month, with a chance to enjoy skilled performances from Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner.
The film centers on Cotillard’s journey to the U.S. in the 1920’s. She’s struggling to survive, but encounters a pimp, played by Phoenix, who helps her out of her misery, notes Entertainment Weekly. But it’s not all rosy and she meets a magician (Renner) who tries to save her from that life.
Indiewire shared several new stills from the film and the poorly photoshopped poster, which completely ruins Cotillard’s face. It’s a shame, but hopefully once we see the film, we’ll forget about the terrible poster.
The Immigrant was directed by James Gray (We Own The Night, Two Lovers) and opens on May 12. It will also be screening at the BAMcinematek in New York City, starting on May 5.
