TV Ratings: 'American Idol,' Fox win night, 'Modern Family' returns up

On Wednesday night Modern Family returned up in the ratings, but couldn't help ABC top Fox.

For the night, Fox and American Idol were up for once with a 2.1 in the advertiser-important 18-49 demographic and 8.87 million viewers, reports HitFix. Despite the win, Idol was not the top program of the night.

Coming in second was ABC, which averaged a 1.7 in the demo and a weak 5.64 million viewers. The Middle and Suburgatory were both down slightly to a 1.8 and 1.6 rating, respectively. Modern Family returned with a new episode and was up to a 3.4 in the demo. Special Nashville: On the Record took in 1.0 in the demo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS managed third place despite airing only one original for the night. The network took in a 1.5 in the 18-49 demo and 7.56 million viewers. A new episode of Survivor was down slightly to a 2.2 in the key demo.

NBC opted to air a full slate of encore episodes, with the network averaging only a 1.0 in the demo and 4.14 million viewers. The CW took in a 0.6 in the demo and 2.06 million viewers. Arrow took in a 0.7 and The 100 improved to a 0.6 rating.
