Ukrainian officer killed during shooting with pro-Russian militia

A Ukrainian security officer was killed after a gun fight with a pro-Russian militia on Sunday.

According to the Associated Press, this is the first gun battle where Ukraine was attacked by pro-Russia men in east Ukraine.

The regional administration in Donetsk, which is heavily populated with Russian-speaking individuals, issued a statement Sunday confirming that one is dead and nine others were wounded. The statement did not release the names of those injured.

Residents were called during the incident and told to stay inside and remain calm. Several reported seeing armored vehicles go through the city and helicopters flying over.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the situation has been named an “antiterrorist action.” The actions have also been described as Russian aggression, as the weapons being used could only be accessed through Russian military.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that “there is no basis for such assertions” and that Moscow was not involved in the incident. Moscow did, however, state that they do have the right to send troops through eastern Ukraine.
