Upon the news of David Letterman announcing his retirement, CBS did not hesitate to announce his replacement. The network chose Stephen Colbert to take over the Late Show sometime in 2015 after Letterman steps down.
The speculation of who would replace Letterman has now shifted to questions about whether or not CBS made the right decision. Will Colbert be able to host his own late night show? Will it be different compared to his time spent on the Comedy Central network? No one knows for sure, but for CBS this is the best bet and best choice they could go with.
The competition of late-night TV is heating up. With a "new age" being ushered in, it comes as no surprise that CBS would go with someone who is more in tuned with a younger generation. Colbert is also a proven, well-known host who is not afraid to ask hard questions and open a show with a unique, modern and timely monologue night after night.
Colbert also has a proven audience and fan base. Fans know what they will get when they tune into the Colbert Report, and with this larger stage, Colbert is not likely to disappoint his audience. Night after night on Comedy Central, Colbert helps to educate the public about politics and holds their attention with his confidence and over the top personality.
CBS made the right choice, even when it comes to logistics. When Colbert takes over the Late Show, he will not be switching time slots from his Comedy Central network, only channels.
Only time will tell if Colbert was the right choice for the job, but with an entire "nation" behind it, the late-night television game is heating up once again.
Look out, Jimmy Fallon. Colbert Nation is coming.
