Angela Bassett has signed on to direct the Whitney Houston biopic set to be released in 2015. Lifetime made the announcement on Thursday.
The a Lifetime Original Movie with Whitney Houston as its working title will document the “I Will Always Love You” singer’s tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband, Bobby Brown from start to end.
Larry Sanitsky will executive produce under The Sanitsky Company, with a script by Shem Bitterman, Variety reports.
In a statement, Bassett “I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story. Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world," according to Lifetime's release.
Bassett knew Houston personally from working with her on Waiting to Exhale in 1995, TIME reports.
Houston died in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton on Feb. 11, 2012. Police concluded there was no foul play involved. She died of accidental drowning with cocaine and several other drugs in her system.
