Los Angeles Clippers guard Jamal Crawford won the NBA Sixth Man Award for the second time in his career on Thursday. He is the oldest player to receive the award and the first to win it with different teams.
Crawford first won the award in 2010 while he was with the Atlanta Hawks. He joins Kevin McHale, Detlef Schrempf, and Ricky Pierce as the only two-time winners of the Sixth Man award. Crawford had 57 first-place votes and a total of 421 points in the vote. Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson was second with 49 first-place votes and 395 points, and San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili was third with nine first-place votes and 138 points, according to Sports Illustrated.
''I actually think he won it because I think voters saw him doing other things for the team - playing defense, running the team at the point guard position when Chris Paul was out at times,'' Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. ''He's been the perfect utility player for a team. He's been awesome.''
This season Crawford set a single-season franchise record for three-pointers with 161. He led the league’s reserve players in scoring by averaging 18.6 points, according to the Associated Press. He was at his best in January where he scored double figures in 15 of 16 games and helped the Clippers go 12-4 in January. In the last two months he missed 13 games due to injury.
The Clipper had a 57-25 record this season, which the best regular-season record in team history. They made the playoffs and are tied at one game apiece with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinal.
