Mark Ryden started his career in the music business, painting iconic works for Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album and artwork for Aerosmith’s single “Love In An Elevator” before going full time to fine art. With his exhibit The Gay 90’s, Ryden called on musicians to each cover one song for a compilation album to accompany the art.
According to The Hollywood Reporter musical artists such as Katy Perry, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, and several others, will cover the song "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)." The 100 year old song was originally written in 1892, gaining some worldwide notoriety as the computer Hal 9000 sang the song as the character Dave was trying to dismantle him in 2001: A Space Odessey.
The compilation The Gay Nineties Old Tyme Music: Daisy Bell will be sold in limited edition of only 999 copies, which Ryden will personally number and sign himself. The cost is $100, which will be for charity to the Little Kids Rock organization. Half of the copies will be held for sale on Ryden’s website starting May 13.
Ryden’s exhibit began on May 3 at the Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles and runs through June 28.
