It has been awhile since we last heard about Roland Emmerich’s planned Independence Day sequel, but the film is still in the works at 20th Century Fox. With little more than two years to go before its release date, the studio has hired a new writer to craft a new draft.
The film was first written by Emmerich and original ID4 co-writer Dean Devlin before James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man) took a crack at it. Now, Deadline has confirmed that Carter Blanchard is working on the script.
If you’ve never heard of Blanchard, you’re not alone. He hasn’t had a script reach the big screen yet, although he has two jobs in the can for big studios. Blanchard is working on Kindergarten Heroes, an adaptation of Mark Millar’s comics for Fox. Warner Bros. is also working on Blanchard’s Spyhunter.
ID4 2 is actually the first of two planned sequels for the original 1996 summer blockbuster. Back in March 2013, Emmerich said that the two films will be called ID Forever Parts I and II. The first part was supposed to be out next year, but has been pushed back to July 1, 2016.
The sequels are a huge gamble for Fox, especially since Will Smith isn’t expected to be involved. Michael B. Jordan was linked last year for the lead role, but nothing’s been confirmed.
