Justin Blackmon was the fifth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and the Jacksonville Jaguars were hoping that Blackmon would be a franchise player. The general manager of the Jaguars David Caldwell revealed this Friday at the team’s pre-draft luncheon that they were under the impression that Blackmon would not be returning for the 2014 season.
Blackmon was indefinitely suspended on November 1, 2013 after he violated the NFL’s substance abuse policy for the third time according to ESPN. Blackmon served a four game suspension at the beginning of the 2013 season due to his second violation of the substance abuse policy. Blackmon only played in four games in 2013, where he caught 29 passes for 415 yards and one touchdown.
Caldwell says that the Jaguars have not been in regular contact with Blackmon much since February and the only way he could be eligible to play this year would be to be reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reports NFL.com. Blackmon was the Jags top receiver during his 2012 rookie season recording over 800 yards and five touchdowns.
Head coach Gus Bradley would love to have Blackmon back with the team, but must focus with the very real possibility that he will not be participating this year. Bradley has had very little contact with Blackmon over the past few weeks. Bradley understands that he needs to focus on preparing the team for the upcoming season.
The NFL draft is this coming Thursday and with some promising young receivers in the draft, it will be interesting to see what the Jaguars do come draft day.
