NBC orders 13 episode farewell to ‘Parenthood’

In past years NBC’s beloved Parenthood has proved to be a hardship for the network, with the show being on the possible chopping block the past few seasons, the series is now coming to an end.

According to The Hollywood Reporter NBC agreed to a 13-episode run of the family drama for creater Jason Katims to wrap up the Braverman’s story. The confirmation came with NBC’s Fall schedule announcement which has the show slotted in the same Thursday night time against ABC’s up-and-comer Scandal, which will be replaced by the peacock’s newest star The Blacklist after Parenthood wraps.

Deadline reported one of the main causes for the show to be on the bubble was cost of such a big ensemble cast. Part of the negotiation was to reduce actors to a 9 episode guarantee, of the 13 episodes left, cutting the cost NBC would have to pay in total actor salary. Of course, hard numbers have put the show on the bubble for the last few seasons, with Season 5’s finale drawing only 3.7 million viewers with a 1.3 in the all-important 18-49 demographic.
