Nets' Deron Williams to have surgery on both ankles

The Brooklyn Nets announced on Thursday that point guard Deron Williams is set to have surgery next week on both of his ankles.

The surgery is scheduled for May 27, according to the Nets' website. Dr. Martin O'Malley, the team's foot and ankle specialist, will perform the surgery. Williams "will have a bone chip removed from his right ankle, and the left ankle will have an arthroscopic cleanout with removal of spurs from both the front and back of the ankle."

The surgery isn't a surprise, since the point guard has struggled with ankle problems and injuries during the previous two seasons and up until now Williams used platelet-rich plasma injections and cortisone shots to try and help against the pain, reports ESPN.

Williams has had at least five cortisone injections over the past two years and he joked, "I have been worried about [getting so many]. I've had a lot."

Williams played in 64 regular season games, averaging 14.3 points, 45 percent shooting and 6.1 assists. His shooting percentage and assists dipped slightly in the playoffs, down to 5.8 assists and 39.5 percent shooting.
