San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who first got a taste of national attention at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, will be formally nominated by President Barack Obama as the next house and urban development secretary on Friday.
Castro was first linked to the job last weekend, but the White House made it official on Friday, notes The Washington Post. Obama will announce Castro’s nomination later today.
The position opened up since Shaun Donovan, the current HUD secretary, will be Obama’s pick to lead the White House Office of Management and Budget. Donovan, 48, has held the position since January 2009 and chaired the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force. He also worked in the department during the Clinton administration.
As for Castro, 39, he became a major figure in the Democratic party after giving the keynote address at the 2012 DNC. He is currently serving his third term as San Antonio mayor and helped put in place new housing and development measures in the Texas city. He has even been considered a potential 2016 Presidential candidate.
Castro’s nomination will have to be approved by the Senate, notes The AP.
