Where one actor's directorial debut, Ryan Gosling's Lost River, has taken a nosedive following its lurid premiere reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, another's gains its first full-fledged invitation into the general public.
According to Variety, Russell Crowe's The Water Diviner has just been acquired by The Weinstein Company, following its May 15 promotional presentation at the Cannes Film Festival. This deal will be directly in relation to its U.S. release rights.
WME Global, who was selling the film's U.S. distribution rights at the festival this week, presented 12 minutes of footage from the film at the Majestic Hotel, hoping to allure distributors to the potential awards contender. Selling the film outside the U.S. will be Mister Smith Entertainment, represented by David Garrett.
In addition to directing, Crowe also stars as Connor, an Australian farmer who, four years after Turkey's Battle of Gallipoli in WWI, goes to Istanbul attempting to discover the fate of his sons, who reported missing in action. Also staring in the movie is Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion), who plays a Turkish woman whom owns a hotel which Connor stays in.
The film is set to be released in Australia and other regions on Dec. 26, but, as of now, there is no word on when the movie is set to play in theaters throughout the U.S.
