Rutgers University offering classes on Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus

Students attending Rutgers University in upstate New York are getting a classroom makeover. The university announced it will be offering classes on Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus this summer.

The New York Daily News reports that the college believes pop icons like Beyoncé are great examples of feminism and women studies. The class will be called “Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyoncé” and will analyze her success as a woman and her roles as a powerful woman of color, musician, mother and wife. Kevin Allred a doctoral student teaching the course told reporters,
“Her music has always had strong implications for what it means to be a beautiful and strong woman today”.

The college will also offer a sociology class titled “The sociology of Miley Cyrus” which will let students look into the life of someone their age and how she went from an innocent Disney star to a sexual diva.
According to The Telegraph, this is not the first time Universities have had classes about celebrities and pop culture. Georgetown University offered a sociology seminar on Jay-Z and Lady Gaga was a topic of discussion at the University of South Carolina.
