Tony Stewart back in sprint car

NASCAR Sprint Cup series driver Tony Stewart got back behind the wheel of a sprint car on Monday. It was the first time he was in a sprint car since he broke his leg last year.

Stewart likes to race sprint cars as a hobby. Last August while racing sprint cars in Iowa, he broke his right leg in a crash. He had to have three surgeries and have a rod inserted into his leg. As a result he was out for the rest of the 2013 NASCAR season. He’s said that he won’t be 100 percent for months as he continues to do physical therapy, according to USA Today.

The session in a sprint car was done at an unspecified location. It was only a private test according to Stewart’s business manager Eddie Jarvis. Stewart talked about getting back in a sprint car on Monday on Twitter.

"Guess who got back in a sprint car for the first time today 🙂 #smokewillrise." Stewart tweeted.

He went on to add, "This was a huge day for me. 9 1/2 months since I've been in one." He also tweeted pictures from the test.

Stewart, a three-time Cup series champion, returned to racing this season. This season he has two top-fives and four top tens and is currently 22nd in the points standings after 12 races, according to Sporting News. He finished 13th in Sunday’s race at Charlotte.

Stewart has said that he will make safety improvement to sprint cars to prevent similar injuries from happening.
