Whitney Houston will be the latest celebrity to get her own Lifetime original movie. Actress Angela Bassett has been picked to direct.
The project, which is currently titled just Whitney Houston, will premiere in 2015. Lifetime will focus on the relationship between Houston and Bobby Brown, which was previously chronicled in a reality series. Whitney Houston will tell the story of how they survived while Houston’s fame kept rising.
The Sanitsky Company will be producing with Betty & Coretta’s Shem Bitterman writing the script. Larry Sanitsky is executive producing. Bassett starred in Betty & Coretta, playing Coretta Scott King, with Mary J. Blige and Dr. Betty Shabazz.
“I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story,” Bassett said in a statement. “Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”
Bassett, of course, is no stranger to musical biopics. She earned an Oscar nomination in 1994 for the Tina Turner biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It, which also earned her a Golden Globe.
Lifetime did not announce who would play Houston in the film.
Houston died in February 2012.
