New Orleans Police spokesperson Frank Roberston reported that of the nine people injured and hospitalized, seven were in stable condition and one was in critical condition, according to The Associated Press. The ninth victim's condition hasn't been released.
Reuters reported that the shooting began after an argument between two men escalated at around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday.
"These are two cowardly young men who chose to settle a dispute with total disregard for human life,” said Ronal Serpas, New Orleans Police superintendent. "Our officers are working around the clock to identify and arrest the suspects. ... We will hold them accountable and we will bring them to justice."
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said that the shooting comes after the city's murder rate had come down to almost a 30-year low.
Bourbon Street is the most famous street in New Orleans, known for its night life and tourism.
