Odds are Portugal’s star player Christiano Ronaldo will play against the US on Sunday, but there is a possibility that he will not be able to. Ronaldo’s doctor has apparently advised him not to play in the World Cup.
MRIs have shown a lot of pressure on the patellar tendon in his left knee via NBCSports. An experienced Portuguese surgeon, Jose Carlos Noronha, told Ronaldo that he could tear the tendon beyond repair if he were to play on it saying he needed at least and immediate two month break from the game.
To Ronaldo, Noronha said, “let your knee rest, or your future is in danger,” he replied “I’m the one that says whether I’m playing or not.”
With Pepe already out due to a suspension from a red card vs. Germany, Portugal could lose two of their best players in a must win game against the US. Ronaldo has an $11 million-per-year contract with Real Madrid and was the most recent FIFA World Player of the Year according to Yahoo. He is Portugal’s best offensive player.
If the US wishes to make it out of the group stages they cannot lose to Portugal. With their best defensive and offensives players sidelined the US will have a good chance to move on. The big question however belongs to Ronaldo – is the World Cup more important than your career?
