NHL forward Ryan Callahan has re-signed with the Tampa Bay Lighting, ending any doubt that he would be a short-term rental for the team.
According to Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, the deal will be for six years with an annual contract of $5.8 million.
Callahan told the Lightning that he is ready for the next part of his hockey career.
“I couldn’t be happier to be part of the Tampa Bay Lightning organization for the next six years and I am excited for this new chapter of my career,” he said. “Tampa Bay has been a great place to live and play from the day I got there. As soon as the season ended I knew it was a place I wanted to be.”
He was in the final year of his contract and could have become an unrestricted free agent, allowing him to sign with any team.
The New York Rangers traded Callahan and a pair of draft picks on March 5 to Tampa Bay for Martin St. Louis, after the team could not agree to a new contract with Callahan, according to the NY Post.
Callahan was a fourth round draft pick by the Rangers in 2004. He has played in 470 games and has 265 career points, according to the NHL.
The Ryan Callahan deal once finalized with Tampa will be six years x $5.8 M AAV with partial NTC
