Second 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' trailer has guns, grit, and goofiness

The second trailer of Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has released, and it does a fantastic job of not only revealing the various narrative threads of the film while keeping all potential spoilers under wraps, but also showing off the lush and cartoonish visuals that made the original film and comics so appealing.

The film stars an absolutely star studded cast, including returning cast members like Mickey Rourke as Marv, Jessica Alba as the now kickass Nancy Callahan, and Powers Boothe as the corrupt and all-powerful Senator Roark. Newcomers include Joseph Gordon Levitt as “Johnny”, Josh Brolin as “Dwight McCarthy” (played by Clive Owen in the previous film), and Eva Green as Ava Lord (whose poster was deemed too racy for the MPAA). Interestingly, Green just starred in 300: Rise of an Empire, another film based on a Frank Miller comic.

What’s interesting about the trailer, however, is the visuals. Rodriguez and Miller are clearly taking greater risks with their playing experimentations with color, shadows, cinematography, and even a strange mix of cartoonish CGI and live action. In many ways, this film feels more like a “comic book” than many other comic book films. Could we expect to see panels and gutters as well? We’ll have to wait until August 22nd to find out. The movie will premiere in both 2D and IMAX 3D, according to CBS News, and this feels like a movie that would truly benefit from the 3D.
