Dr. Kent Brantley, an American doctor serving as the medical director for the Samaritan’s Purse Ebola Consolidated Center in Liberia, has contracted the fatal virus.
Prior to working with Ebola patients in West Africa, the 33-year-old doctor was a physician for a family practice in Fort Worth, Texas, according to the Associated Press. Brantley has been in Liberia since October 2013, participating in a post-residency program organized by Samaritan’s Purse, a humanitarian organization that provides assistance to people in need.
A statement released by the relief agency on July 26 read, “Samaritan’s Purse is committed to doing everything possible to help Dr. Brantley during this time of crisis. We ask everyone to please pray for him and his family.” Dr. Brantley is currently being treated at ELWA Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia. He has a wife and two children.
The Ebola virus has killed over 600 people since the latest outbreak, many of which were health workers who were brave enough, and selfless enough, to put their lives on the line for global safety.
