Facebook has created a new feature in hopes of widening the consumer pool for small and medium-sized businesses. The feature provides a “Buy” button for Facebook advertisements and for posts that businesses share on their official pages.
For now, Facebook is testing the feature with only a few businesses, one of which is a watch company called Modify Watches, according to CNN Money. But, if all goes well, there are 30 million small businesses with Facebook pages that could potentially benefit from this “Buy” button in the future.
Brian Solis, the principal analyst at Altimeter Group, commends Facebook for creating “a tremendous opportunity for savvy small businesses to generate sales in real time,” and deemed the feature an “opportunity for innovation.”
Facebook released a statement on July 17 assuring consumers that payment methods will be “safe and secure,” and that buyers’ information will not be accessible to any other advertisers.
If successful, Facebook may become a competitor of other sites with similar easy-purchase features, such as Twitter and Amazon.
