Scarlett Johansson's newest film Lucy easily dominated Dwayne The Rock Johnson's Hercules on Friday at the box office.
Universal's science fiction action film debuted to $17.1 million on Friday, with only $2.7 million coming from Thursday night previews. Forbes reports that the film, which had a $40 million budget is projected to pass that by the end of the weekend, coming in at around $46 million.
The film could be Johansson's first non-Marvel film to reach the $100 million mark while it's in theaters and should be the biggest film for director Luc Besson as well.
MGM and Paramount's fantasy film followed far behind with $11.05 million on Friday, with $2.1 million due to previous night's previews. Though The Rock's film is far behind Lucy, Hercules is still performing better than expected. Should the film continue to perform as well over Saturday and Sunday, Hercules will likely earn close to $30 million on the weekend.
Last weekend's top two films, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Purge: Anarchy, dropped to third and fourth, respectively. Deadline notes Apes grossed $4.75 million on Friday and is projected to earn $16 million on the weekend. Purge snagged $3.3 million and should finish with $10 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two new limited-release films, A Most Wanted Man and Magic in the Moonlight have opened to decent box office numbers. The last film from Philip Seymour Hoffman will likely gross $2.2 million through 361 theaters, while Woody Allen's latest flick will earn $390,000 for the weekend.
