‘20/20’ co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas checks back into rehab

Elizabeth Vargas has checked back into rehab to be treated for alcohol dependency just nine months after she checked out of rehab.

According to the Associated Press, the 20/20 co-anchor checked into a treatment facility this past weekend while on vacation. Vargas has said that while she has been overcoming the disease, the recovery process is challenging.

“I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry,” Vargas said.

ABC News released a statement about Vargas, saying that it stands “squarely behind her” and although they are awaiting her return, her health is a priority. In November of last year, Vargas spent several weeks in a treatment facility. Two months after she returned to the air, she admitted to being an alcoholic, reported The Wrap.

“I am. I am an alcoholic,” Vargas said.

She has said that the anxiety she dealt with as a child led her to drink. Vargas said she is “committed to battling” alcoholism and grateful for the support.
