The Boston Red Sox are close to signing Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo.
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox will sign Castillo to a six-year deal worth around $72 million.
Castillo left Cuba six months ago and has been living in Haiti since then. He is 27 years old and has been compared to Andrew McCutchen and fellow Cuban Yasiel Puig, according to ESPN.
The largest contract signed by a player from Cuba is six-years and worth $68 million, which was signed by Jose Abreu with the Chicago White Sox last October.
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told MLB.com that they have seen and talked Castillo, but the Red Sox will not publicly say what their thoughts are on him.
Last month, after he was cleared by the US to sign with a team, Castillo had a work out in Florida where all but two MLB teams attended.
The New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers held private workouts with Castillo in addition to the Red Sox.
If the Red Sox sign Castillo he could join Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield, another Cuban player.
