Demi Lovato has thanked Kim Kardashian for encouraging women to be more comfortable with their bodies.
Lovato has famously struggled with body image issues since and young age, though it appears that she is learning to love who she is while maintaining a healthy weight. While the singer once battled an eating disorder and depression, she has since begun to embrace her body the healthy way.
In a new interview with Access Hollywood, Lovato spoke candidly about her own body image issues. She maintained that the media held a large part in her struggle growing up, as there wasn’t much variety in representation of body types. “When I was growing up and when I was a pre-teen, the people that I had to look up to [for] body image [were] extremely underweight… [They] were all very bony at that time, and that was the in thing,” she said.
As for her transformation from the early 2000s to today, Lovato says she feels happier and healthier now than she did when she was thinner and dealing with major social pressures to stay thin. “The very first time that I ever went to the VMAS, I just looked so bony and fragile and unhappy,” said Lovato. “Yes, I was at the VMAs and I was 16 and I was having an incredible time, but at the same time I was miserable.”
Lovato acknowledges public figures like Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé for redefining beauty standards and pushing women to accept their bodies in all their curvy glory! “I really credit women like Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian… [They] completely revolutionized what our generation’s view of perception of what beautiful is, and I really think that they had a huge impact on that.”
Lovato is currently maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine and
pushes girls to embrace body positivity. She is preparing for her next big tour and has been reportedly working on new music with longtime pal Nick Jonas.
