Emma Watson joins feminist protest against Turkish Prime Minister

Harry Potter star Emma Watson has officially joined thousands of women in a feminist protest against the recent remarks of Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Arinc.

TIME reports that Arinc made a speech during Ramadan that infuriated women around the world, prompting Emma Watson to jump into action. Arinc condemned women for what he considers inappropriate behavior in public. In his speech geared toward the Turkish nation, Arinc stated, “A woman should be chaste. She should know the difference between public and private. She should not laugh in public.”

The comment about laughter sparked a nonviolent international feminist protest; thousands of women are posting laughing selfies online with #direnkahkaha, which roughly translates to “resist” or “stop laughter.” Women are also posting while using the hashtag #direnkadin or “resist women.” The tags have become trending topics on Twitter.

Emma Watson has notably joined the protest as well, posting a laughing selfie on both Twitter and Instagram. Watson was recently named a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women. The protest has gained sizeable momentum on social media and seems like just the sort of movement Watson would dutifully join after stepping into her new global position.
