Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to become the top grossing film of summer on Saturday, surpassing Michael Bay's latest directorial disaster Transformers: Day of Extinction.
James Gunn's newest film started off strong at the box office in its first full day at the box office with $37.8 million and never looked back. GOTG then hit the $200 million mark last weekend as well.
By Friday, the newest Marvel franchise had grossed $239 million domestically, Variety reports. The film, which has next to no competition at the box office this weekend, is projected to reach $246 million today.
That amount would put GOTG over the current top film, Transformers: Age of Extinction, which currently has earned $243.3 million at the U.S. box office. The Marvel film will likely surpass $252 million by the end of the weekend.
Disney's other strong summer performer Maleficent, will fall to the third spot with a domestic cume of $237 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the fourth spot, X-Men: Days of Future Past sits with $232.6 million.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 currently are tied at $202.9 million to round out the top five summer films.
While Transformers might be lagging somewhat here in the United States, the film has done gangbusters overseas and has a worldwide gross of $1.05 billion. GOTG is far, far behind with $430.7 million.
