Michael Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player in the league, was cut by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday afternoon.
Sam didn’t make the teams’ final roster of about 53 players. “I was pulling for him and it didn’t work out,” the teams coach Jeff Fisher at a press conference after the announcement was made Yahoo! reports .
Sam was drafted by the team despite critics, saying that Sam should not be picked up by any NFL team based on his personal life. Critics of Sam said that he could be distraction during games and cause issues among players.
Despite this, Sam entered the 2014 NFL draft becoming the seventh round pick overall. Sam was a defensive end for the Rams, and he did well during the preseason games. He had 11 tackles and three sacks according to ESPN. At the end of the preseason Thursday, Sam finished strong with six tackles against the Miami Dolphins.
Since Sam didn’t make the cut with the Rams, the other teams in the league will able to grab him if they’re interested, but if no one picks him up by Sunday afternoon he will be free to sign with a practice team.
