Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will not be returning this season as he will need surgery on his right knee.
Sources spoke with Yahoo Sports and said that he will undergo knee surgery next week, prematurely ending his second season in a row. He tore a ligament in his left knee last season.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache will be called on once again to repair a knee for Machado. He previously noticed an abnormality in Machado's left knee, which is also said to be present in the right knee.
According to MLB.com, Machado had been dealing with a right knee ligament sprain, while on the 15-day disabled list. The team had been quiet about the injury and its severity until recently, when manager Buck Showalter said on Wednesday he would clear everything up in the coming days.
The season hasn't been an easy one for Machado, who spent the first month of the season on the bench as he continued to come back from the left knee injury. He then returned, batting .278 and 12 home runs before a five-game suspension for throwing his bat intentionally.
The young third baseman then hit .351 upon his return over a 28-game span, with five more homers and 15 RBI.
The Orioles currently have the best record in the AL East.
