Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles snagged a strong $25 million on Friday at the box office, easily taking down last weekend's top film The Guardians of the Galaxy.
Paramount and producer Michael Bay's reboot has blasted out of the gate and managed to overperform at the box office in its first full day of release, despite the savaging it received from critics. Forbes reports the $25 million also includes the $4.6 million TMNT earned from Thursday previews.
The film was projected to maybe earn $45 million for the weekend, but now adjusted estimates peg the film at grossing around $63 million for the weekend, which would be the second strong new release for August and might help a weak summer box office.
Following it is last weekend's overperformer, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which brought in $12.33 million and is projected to earn around $42 million for the weekend to land in the second spot. The film has done well through its first week, already up to a domestic cume of $146.7 million.
New wide release film, Into the Storm opened with $6.5 million on Friday and the $50 million film is projected to earn a decent $18 million for the weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Hundred-Foot Journey followed behind with $3.4 million and is projected to gross about $10 million.
Step Up All In, the final new release film on the weekend, didn't perform so well on Friday with just $2.84 million and will be lucky if it grosses more than $7 million on the weekend. Still, the film is doing well overseas, grossing $30 million already.
