Orange Is The New Black star Taryn Manning has confirmed that most of the prison garb on set of the Netflix hit is authentic government-issued clothing.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Manning opened up about what it’s like to work as part of the cast of OITNB. The show features a handful of scenes where the actresses strip down to their underwear, so Manning announced, “Yeah, we wear, like, court-ordered granny panties.”
Manning continued to talk about the wardrobe and asserted that although it may not be the most fashionable thing to wear on television, the clothing does help the actors involved ground themselves in their work.
“They’re authentic, yeah. And then, they’re almost like sports bras, and they flatten your boobs. So everyone just has, like, a uni-boob. [Laughs] But it’s fine, it gets you more into character, you’re just, like, getting this big old underwear on, and all,” she said.
As for finding inspiration for her controversial character, drama addict and homophobe Pennsatucky, Manning says she finds material on the Internet. She also said she’s received plenty of positive fan mail from actual United States prisoners thanking her for her work on Orange.
Manning recently issued a restraining order against her former best friend after allegedly receiving numerous sexually explicit text messages and emails.
