"Every dog has its day, but not every dog held the kind of record Zeus from Michigan had. He was the tallest dog in the world, but he sadly died last week at age 5.
Kevin Doorlag, who owned Zeus, confirmed the news of the black Great Dane’s death to The Kalamazoo Gazette Thursday. Zeus was set to celebrate his sixth birthday in November.
Doorlag said that Zeus was a “wonderful dog” and will be missed by him and his wife, Denise. They would usually let Zeus sit on their laps during family barbecues.
“He’d sit on people’s laps. I loved to see people’s reactions when he’d sit down,” Doorlag told ABC News. “He just seemed to want to make people smile and happy and … he was just a very sweet dog.”
Zeus held the Guinness World Record for tallest dog ever and debuted in the book in 2012. He continued to hold the record, standing 44 inches at the shoulder. On his hind legs, Zeus stood an astonishing 7 feet, 4 inches and he weighed 155 pounds.
While Zeus became internationally famous, he never forgot about his roots. He served as a therapy dog in the Kalamazoo area.
“Those are some of the things I'll never forget about him,"" Doorlag told the Gazette. ""He was definitely a great dog."""
