Neill Blomkamp may have escaped the slums of District 9 in Elysium, but the South african director is back on earth with his latest project, Chappie.
The film takes its title from a robot, given the power to be a fully thinking and even artistic machine by Dev Patel. Chappie gets abducted by a group of criminals played by Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja of South African group Die Antwoord. Sharlto Copley, who has starred in Blomkamp’s last two films, voices Chappie and also did motion-capture work.
Hugh Jackman is the international superstar on the project, starring as an anti-artificial intelligence critic who wants to destroy Chappie. Bomkamp also booked Sigourney Weaver for a role.
The first trailer for Chappie debuted at Entertainment Weekly today.
Chappie will be released on March 6. Sony and Media Rights Capital co-produced the project.
Blomkamp won immediate acclaim for his first film, 2009’s District 9, which even won a Best Picture Oscar nomination. His second film, last year’s Elysium, was less successful with critics, but still grossed $286 million worldwide.
