Johnny Depp shares his thoughts on playing the Big Bad Wolf in 'Into the Woods' film

Johnny Depp is once again bringing another Stephen Sondheim musical character to the big screen in Disney's Into the Woods and talked about the honor.

The music and lyrics from Into the Woods was created by legendary musical theater artist Sondheim and shows what happens to some of the most renowned fairy tale characters including Little Red Riding Hood and Jack from "Jack and the Beanstalk." The musical first debuted on Broadway in 1987 and now it's getting the big screen treatment.

Depp, who previously played the infamous Sweeney Todd in the movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street shared his excitement about working with Sondheim's music once again.

"I was honored, and, to be truthful, somewhat proud," Depp said in an interview with Hollywood Outbreak. That not only Rob Marshall and John Deluca wanted me to play The Wolf, but, that Sondheim, again, you know, believed in me to play the part and sing his notes yet again."

Directed by Rob Marshall, Disney's Into the Woods also stars Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, and Chris Pine.

Marshall talked about what inspired his desire to bring Into the Woods to movie theatres.

“I do feel this is very much a fairy tale for the post-9/11 era,” Marshall said according to Deadline. “I have to say it was 2011 and I was listening to President Obama speak to the families of the victims on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and it was incredibly moving, and he was incredibly compassionate. And he said to the families, ‘You are not alone. No one is alone.' It’s obviously, to me, the main song in Into The Woods and I felt this might be the time for kids of today, families of today, that there might be some hope in the world."

Into the Woods hits theatres December 25.
