'Mad Men' creator talks about difficulty of selling the show to networks initially

Mad Men has become an internationally loved television show but show creator Matthew Weiner admitted that convincing networks it would be successful was no easy task.

“There were no discernible TV stars in it, and it seemed like it was going to be a tough sell," Weiner said according to Variety. “I had a very non-formulaic way of telling a story.” Weiner compared Mad Men to a "French movie."

There might not have been any major television stars when the show first debuted, but that statement is no longer true.

Mad Men stars Jon Hamm who has been praised for and become largely recognized from his performance in the show. Hamm plays an advertising entrepreneur in the 1960s named Don Draper who is the go to guy for any company trying to ensure success with the help of advertisements.

The first of the two part seventh and final season of the show premiered last April with 2.3 million viewers, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It was by no means the highest amount of viewers the show has seen in past premieres but considering the Mad Men took on some stiff competition on Sunday nights against HBO's Game of Thrones, it's transparent to see why some viewers might have skipped out on the niche 1960s period drama.
