‘Sleepy Hollow’ Recap: “The Akeda”

The Fight of Good vs. Evil

The episode begins with Ichabod and Abbie heading to Fredrick’s Manor with the Sword of Methuselah in tow. They are preparing for the rise of Moloch when a bolt of lightning hits the hood of their car causing a power outage. They stop at a mechanic’s for repair but after hearing it will take an hour to fix, they steal a motorcycle and head to Fredrick’s Manor. They arrive there and find the house abandoned. They discover Henry’s model of Sleepy Hollow and discover a pentagram across Sleepy Hollow of the places that Henry has attacked. They hear Katrina’s scream and run outside and find The Horseman preparing her for the binding ritual. Ichabod confronts him and they fight until Ichabod renders him weaponless and Katrina is saved.

Katrina can see The Horseman as Abraham and extends the amulet’s enchantment so Ichabod can see him as Abraham. He demands to know where Moloch is or he will kill him. Abraham tells him that the Sword of Methuselah comes with a price: the sacrifice of the person who uses it to kill. Katrina begs Ichabod to spare Abraham until they find out more information about the truth of what he says. They chain up Abraham in The Archives and Jenny finds out the chapter about what Abraham said. Abraham was indeed telling the truth and Abbie asks Ichabod if he is prepared to kill Henry if he stands in the way of defeating Moloch. Ichabod looks hesitant but agrees. Jenny suggests having Irving use the sword since Henry owns his soul. Henry is standing in the forest with Moloch as he continues to grow stronger.

Katrina continues to talk to Abraham and claims her true intentions were to save him but defeat Moloch. Ichabod overhears the conversation and tells her the plan to have Irving use the sword. He also asks her if she is prepared to kill Henry if necessary. Katrina responds with “there is always another way.” Abbie and Jenny are continuing to do research about the sword. Ichabod tells Abbie he will kill Henry if necessary. Jenny plays the voicemail Irving left to her and they discover a code of where to search for him. They go to old military outposts and explore the tunnels underneath. They find Irving and inform him of the plan. He is hesitant but agrees to help, under the condition that Jenny will look after his family if something happens to him.

They arrive at The Archives with Irving as they continue to interrogate Abraham. They threaten him and he eventually tells them that Moloch is located by the Four White Trees in the forest. Moloch is merging Purgatory with the real world and that is changing the trees into darkness. The darkening of the first tree brings lightning, the second tree brings blood, the the third tree brings the demon army to life and the falling of the fourth tree completes the formation of Hell on earth.

They are in desperate need of weapons and go find Nick Holly at the bar and ask for his help. He is also skeptical to help but it begins hailing blood and he agrees to help. They acquire all of the ancient weapons he has and Katrina is going to revitalize the ancient magic all these weapons have. Abbie asks Nick to keep an eye on Abraham no matter what happens. Ichabod and Katrina have an argument about the conversation he overheard with her and Abraham. They come to the agreement that until Moloch is defeated, they will only “be soldiers” to each other and nothing else.

The Third Tree is burning as Moloch and Henry await the arrival of The Horseman. Moloch calls for his army to rise as Ichabod, Abbie, Jenny, Katrina and Irving enter the forest. They begin battling the demons and Abbie is shot in the shoulder. Jenny takes her to safety while Irving and Ichabod slay several demons. We see Henry control his Horseman of War and he arrives and Irving battles with him. Irving defeats the Horseman of War by stabbing it through the chest, but Irving is fatally wounded in the process. Katrina tries desperately to save Irving while Ichabod begs him to hang on. Irving passes away, Abbie is devastated by the loss of Irving.

Irving has died and Ichabod promises that Irving will have not died in vain. They argue about who will use the sword and Abbie demands to use the sword first and they all agree to help. They are all prepared to make sacrifices if necessary. Moloch commands Henry to retrieve the sword since Abraham failed. Henry is reluctant since he is without armor and when he learns that he is just a pawn to Moloch. He reluctantly marches to the church and finds Abbie inside waiting on him. She holds the sword in her hand but is quickly restrained by roots from the ground. Jenny shoots Henry but is also quickly restrained by the roots. Henry grabs the sword but finds out it was a trick by Katrina. Ichabod stands behind Henry with the real Sword of Methuselah. Henry secures the church and claims the only way they are going to leave is if they kill him.

Ichabod hols the sword to Henry’s neck, demanding he let him pass so he can defeat Moloch. He has offered to sacrifice himself to free Henry. Henry almost seems convinced of this but grabs the real sword from Ichabod and leads them into the forrest. They are all tied to the trees and present before Moloch. Moloch commands Henry to kill Katrina as his first sacrifice. Ichabod desperately pleads with Henry to kill him instead. Henry gives a long speech and swings the sword at Ichabod. He then quickly turns around and stabs Moloch. Everyone looks on in shock as Moloch is appearing to die as the episode ends!
