CBS announces David Letterman's final 'Late Show' episode date

Fans of The Late Show with David Letterman can now officially mark when the host makes his final appearance on their calendars. CBS announced he'll host his last episode on May 20, 2015.

Vulture reported the episode date, noting it's a Wednesday opposed to a Friday, making for a short week for the late night program. Had The Late Show ended on that Friday, the 22nd, it would have marked the 23rd anniversary since Johnny Carson, Letterman's idol, retired. But it appears CBS didn't want Letterman's finale to be lost among the Memorial Day activities.

Or, as the publication notes, perhaps Letterman himself choose the date, so as to not seem like he was taking his whole career from Carson's cue. Also, May 20 is also the last day of the 2014-15 TV season, so this final episode would serve as a great ratings draw for the show's average this season.

Letterman announced his retirement from hosting late night in April. Taking his place is The Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert, who will be leaving his own Comedy Central program on the 18th, just one day before Craig Ferguson, host of The Late Late Show airing after Letterman, leaves his hosting position.

CBS has not announced when Colbert begins hosting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Man, it feels weird typing that show title.

By his final episode, Letterman will have hosted 6,028 episodes of late night television, between his time on The Late Show and Late Night back on NBC.
