For years, Paul Reubens, a.k.a. Pee-Wee Herman, has tried bringing his beloved character back to the big screen, with Judd Apatow producing and Reubens co-writing the script. After many ups-and-downs, though, the new comedy is finally coming, and from a familiar source. For Netflix has stepped up to produce and distribute the new movie.
As The Wrap revealed exclusively, the movie has not gotten the deal officially in place, but a source to the publication said the project moved to the site "a gazillion months ago." Although Universal was once set to make the movie, the film isn't associated with that studio anymore. Considering the popularity of Pee-Wee properties on the website, Netflix feels this is a great option for their production efforts.
According to the publication, production starts next year, possibly as soon as February, under a script by Reubens and Paul Rust. No title or plot has been announced, but Reubens told the A.V. Club last month that a director has been selected.
Word came out on this new movie back in 2010 and will be the first Pee-Wee feature since Big Top Pee-Wee released in 1988. Reubens also returned to the character on Broadway with Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway, which also premiered on HBO in March of 2011.
This is not the only comedy sequel being distributed and funded by a website, as Crackle is in the midst of making a Joe Dirt sequel.
